KookieJar: Release history
An early version of KookieJar was released on 3 September 1998.
KookieJar 6.0 was originally released on 20 July 2001.
30 November - version 6.3:
- Updated web site URLs and contact info in documentation. (The website is gradually moving to a new domain at www.tranglos.com.)
- Full source code released.
- KookieJar now has an account at SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kookiejar/
17 March 2001 - version 6.1.7:
- Improved the template editor dialog box.
16 March 2001 - version 6.1.6:
- Fixed a major bug which would prevent users from creating new signatures if no signatures were defined in the first place.
- "Tagline file" is now called, more properly, "Tagline definition". The term "Tagline file" is reserved exclusively for the text file where the actual taglines/quotes are stored.
6 March 2002 - version 6.1.4:
- Complete Help file added. (The file can also be downloaded separately - see the Downloads page).
25 January 2002 - version 6.1.3:
- Minor cosmetic fixes; many tooltips added.
5 January 2002 - version 6.1.2:
- Fixed a bug with lines in quotes not being wrapped.
5 January 2002 - version 6.1:
- Added "Generate all" hotkey. It works just like the activation hotkey. When pressed, KookieJar will generate all active signatures. This allows you to force KJ to create new set of signatures without having to bring up the program when it's running in the background. By defalt, the hotkey is Shift+Alt+F5.
- It is now possible to "escape" the line-break marker in tagline files: you just have to double it. For instance, if you use "|" to mark manual line breaks in taglines, but you still want to use the "|" sign in some taglines, type it TWICE when the character should be interpreted as part of the signature text rather than a line-break marker. For instance:
This text | will appear on two lines
This text || will appear on one line and include a single vertical bar.
- The "Edit Tagline" dialog box now has an "Edit taglines" button. Click this button to edit your taglines in the associated application.
- In the "Edit Tagline" dialog box, on the "Format" tab, you can now enter ANY character you wish as the "Line break marker" for single-line taglines. (Previously you could only choose one of several predefined characters.)
- The "Edit Tagline" dialog box, "Format" tab, has two new configuration options related to wrapping long lines in taglines:
- "Soft-wrap lines": for single-line taglines, causes lines to be wrapped even if they contain the line-break marker. This procedure is applied after processing line break markers. (Normally, lines that contain line break markers are not wrapped automatically, because you have already indicated the line break points by inserting the markers.) For multi-line taglines, selecting this option allows them to be wrapped. (Normally, multi-line taglines are not wrapped automatically, because they are already split into lines.)
- "Reflow lines when wrapping": This option is enabled only if the "Soft-wrap lines" option (above) is checked. Normally, KookieJar only wraps lines that are too long, but preserves the already-existing linebreaks (e.g. those resulting from processing the line break markers). If you select this option, any existing line breaks will be stripped, and the tagline will be wrapped as if it were a single paragraph.
- When you select the "Edit tagline file" menu command, you can hold down the Shift key to bypass the file selection dialog box and immediately edit the tagline file that belongs to the currently displayed signature.
- Fixed a bug with "List index out of bounds" error message when manually selecting a tagline from a file that has the "Load taglines on demand" option set.
21 August 2001 - version 6.08:
- In previous releases, I forgot to include the file "haileris.dll" in program distribution. THis caused all the %ERISDATE* and %ERISTIME* tokens to fail. The dll file is now installed correctly.
- To create a new template, open the Signarure Editor dialog box, and specify a non-existent file name for each template you want to use. When you click the "Edit" button (for text, RTF and/or HTML template), a sample default template will be automatically created with the name you specified.
- New function: "Clone signature", creates a new signature will all settings inherited from the signature that is currently selected (active). NOTE: The cloned signature will initially have the same "Location" filenames as the original signature. This means that when both signatures are generated, one will immediately override the other. For this reason, the cloned signature is initially inactive (disabled). You will have to check the "This signature is Active" box to enable the cloned signature.
- Filename fields in signature and tagline file editors now default to proper directories, to help you select files.
13 August 2001 - version 6.07:
- Added "Start with Windows" option. This is stored in Windows registry. Note that the uninstall program will not be able to remove this, so you should uncheck the option manually before uninstalling KookieJar. (The shortcut is no longer placed in system Startup folder during installation.)
- New timer option: create sig at every full hour, half hour, quarter or 10 minutes period (i.e. not "every 10 minutes", but only at 5:00, 5:10, 5:20, etc.)
9 August 2001 - version 6.05:
- Fixed nasty bug whereby multi-line tagline files to be saved incorrectly (without the tagline separator). This caused the file to be loaded as one, huge, single tagline. Oops.
- Version 6.05
20 July 2001 - version 6.0 beta:
- Version 6.0 beta released, supporting multiple signatures, multiple quote files and more. See What's new in Kookie Jar 6.0 for detailed information about new additions and modifications.
14 July 2001:
- This is the last release of KookieJar 5.9! Next release will be version 6.0, a complete rewrite (Yes, it's in the works!). Version 5.9 will not be maintained any more; any updates will be cosmetic or done to fix any major bugs that might pop up (which is unlikely).
- Activation hotkey can now be configured in the "Options" dialog box, "Misc" tab. However, changes made there will take effect only after KookieJar is closed and restarted.
- Version 5.99
28 January 2001:
- The tray-icon menu now has an "Add quote" command for easier access.
- The program and its tray icon can now be (optionally) completely hidden from view. Click the tray-icon menu, select "Hide", and forget that KookieJar is silently crafting you .sig files in the background! To get the program window back, just re-start the program using the Start menu shortcut.
- Version number is still 5.98f :)
21 December 2000:
- Added activation hotkey, so that KookieJar window can be restored and brought to the front when it is minimized to system tray 9or hidden behind other windows). Default hotkey is "Shift+Ctrl+F5". Currently, it can be modified or disabled by manually eduting the INI file (look for "HotKey" and "HotKeyActivate" settings in [KookieOptions] section.)
- Version number is now 5.98f
19 December 2000:
- Added an option to hide the program completely when minimized, i.e. it doesn't even show up in the taskbar tray. (If you want to restore the program, e.g. to change its configuration or force it to exit, you will need to run the program from its shortcut.)
- Version number is now 5.98e
4 June 2000:
- Major addition: Two new quote selection modes: RandomUnique (select quotes at random, without repeating them until all are exhausted) and RandomMultiFile (select random quotes from more than one quote file).
- Signature can now be copied to clipboard (the actual signature file on disk, not just the random quote)
- Version number is now 5.98
5 December 1999:
- A few installer bugs fixed (your custom template file should not be overwritten anymore)
- Bug fixed in saving quote file in Unix format
- Version number is now 5.97d
20 November 1999:
- Added Help file.
- Quote files are now saved in original format, i.e. a Unix quote file is saved back in Unix format. (only DOS and UNIX formats are supported.)
- "Signature" menu now has two new commands, allowing user to quickly view the saved signature file and the template file. By default, "quikview.exe" is used as viewer. It is possible to use an alternate application to view (or edit) signature and template files, but this requires manual editing of the "kookie.ini" file (the settings: ViewAppSig and ViewAppTemplate, respectively).
- Version number is now 5.97c
14 November 1999:
- By an oversight, random quote was always wrapped, even if wrapping was turned off. By another oversight, it was impossible to turn off the timer persistently :)
- Other minor fixes (selected quote file was erroneously reset when Options dialog was open)
- Version number is now 5.97a
12 November 1999:
- Added full menu with keyboard shortcuts.
- Added support for two more signature formats ("Full RTF" and "Full HTML"). There are now 5 available formats, allowing total control over the signature formatting.
- Template editor is now a RichEdit control, so that RTF templates (used when signature format is "Full RTF") may now be edited safely. Note that this is not a full- featured RTF editor, and supports only movement keys, insert/delete keys and clipboard operations. For anything fancier, create the template in an RTF-capable editor (such as WordPad) and copy/paste the tet into the KookieJar template editor.
- Added support for multi-line quotes (including support for Unix-style "fortune" files).
- Changed quote file selection method (as a result of adding multi-line quote support).
- "Alert on AudioCD failure" option is now honored.
- "Start minimized" option was not honored; it is now.
- Added token: %RANDLINE (see file syntax.txt).
- "Load on demand" feature should no longer have any unwanted side-effects (display problems, etc. are gone).
- Better error handling.
- Several minor fixes, internal changes.
- Version number is now 5.97
Changes introduced after version 5.95 include:
- Implemented "Load on Demand" feature. If checked, the quotes file will only be loaded when a new random quote needs to be selected, and immediately unloaded thereafter. This increases processing time but reduces memory usage.
- New option: "Use quotes". The quotes file will only be used if this option is checked. This allows you to easily disable quotes file temporarily.
- Rearranged the Options dialog interface, to group settings in a more logical manner. All settings pertaining to using the quotes file are now located on the "Quotes" tab.
- Added automatic installer/uninstaller.
