I. Bugs
Phone dialer does not work on Windows XP. This will not be fixed until version 2.0 arrives.
The Import/Export module (dckport.exe) does not support custom fields and user-defined categories.
I spent a long time trying to fix the problems which occurred when categories were deleted, and I was convinced I got it right this time... unfortunately, the error persists. I don't think I'll be able to fix it properly in this release.
Whenever your .DCK file is opened across a local network link, you may encounter the following error on saving the file: "Error in Folder Monitor. Win32 Error. Code 2. The system cannot find the file specified". The file, however, is saved correctly. What happens is that the folder monitoring function fails. PhoneDeck uses folder monitoring to detect when another application has changed the currently open file - for instance, if you edit the same file in two instances of PhoneDeck. However, Windows' folder monitoring does not (cannot, I think) work across a network. To eliminate the error message, you need to turn off folder monitoring in PhoneDeck. This cannot be done in the Options dialog box; you'll have to manually edit the phonedeck.ini file (when PhoineDeck is not running). Open
the "phonedeck.ini" file in a text editor and change the line DisableFolderMon=0
to DisableFolderMon=1
Some users have reported that when launching an URL or an email address, the web browser or email client starts correctly, but PhoneDeck reports "Error code: 2". What this means is that the program (or the system) returned a code which PhoneDeck interprets as an error code. The best I can do at this time is to add an option to ignore such error codes if they happen; this is not an error that happens inside of PhoneDeck or caused by it.
If you start the Import/Export module from PhoneDeck and close the module immediately without clicking the "Next" or "Previous" buttons, PhoneDeck may not be restarted correctly - instead, you may see an "Error 217" dialog box. Note that the error goes away if you go to the next or previous page in the Import/Export module at least once, or if you wait at least two or three seconds before closing the importer. I have no fix for this at this time.
On some Windows NT and Windows 2000 system, closing the "Dial" dialog box causes an error in library "ntdll.dll"; PhoneDeck subsequently crashes. PhoneDeck is not explicitly using that dll, and I really have no idea why this happens; the error does not occur on my Windows 2000 Pro SP2 system, nor on the Windows 95 and NT 4.0 systems where I tested the program. I would appreciate any hints or further details about this problem. (Do make sure that you have configured the modem settings correctly in PhoneDeck, though.)
II. Limitations
Despite what the Help file claims, the Category Customization dialog box does not yet support drag and drop. (I was sure I'd done it already! :-) You can move categories by clicking the Up and Down buttons, though.
When you change the font for the tree panel display, all font properties are updated correctly except for the font color. The new font color you have chosen will be correctly reflected after you have closed and reopened the addressbook file or it will be reflected immediately if you also change the background color for the tree panel.
The export template files included with PhoneDeck aren't all that great. They work fine, but there should be more of them. I just don't have the time to work on these a lot; if you've made a useful HTML templatye for exporting (and possibly printing) addresses, I would very much appreciate if you sent it to me, so that I could include it with the future releases of the porgram. Thanks!
Area codes (such as in US phone numbers) are not handled correctly by the dialer. (FIXED, but not entirely.)
